MEETING OF THE NATIONAL
COORDINATORS OF THE GLOBAL MEETING OF GENERATIONS
(May 2000, Istanbul) |
|
Global Meeting of Generations (GMG)
is a partnership between 16 organizations, including UN
agencies, multilateral development banks and civil
society organizations. It is an exciting series of
global conferences, national and regional meetings and
special programs that embrace all generations in the
pursuit of an equitable development in the 21st
century. The goal is to embrace new sources of energy
and creativity in accelerating social development.
The essence of the concept is that
basic issues must be mediated between generations and
the mission is to connect the three of them: those who
will have the responsibility of improving the human
condition, those who laid development groundwork in the
past and those who currently lead the effort.
The initiatives have been the first
of its kind: engaging the capable youth and the capable
age in solving society’s problems through National and
Regional Intergenerational Dialogues; strengthening
youth leadership in social development through the
Common Futures Forum, a network of outstanding young
social entrepreneurs; bringing all generations together
for two global meetings; and stimulating research to
launch the intergenerational movement as a way to make
it creditable and sustainable.
The meeting in May 2000 was an
opportunity for the GMG activists to build upon their
experience so far and introduce them the means to
further ameliorate their national and regional
intergenerational dialogues, with specific emphasis on
deliberative democracy. |
