Budapest, Hungary
will be the site for the 4th Ministerial Conference on Environment and
Health: The Future for Our Children on June 23-25. The event will run in
parallel with the Healthy Planet Forum’s own Civil Society and NGO
Conference.
The ministerial
conference, which is run by the World Health Organization’s Regional
Office Europe, is the fourth in a series started in 1989, bringing
together ministers of health and environment, as well as major
stakeholders from over 50 European countries. Ministers are expected to
reach consensus and make political commitments to ensure safer
environments for children through the adoption of a conference
declaration and of the European Action Plan for Children's Health and
Environment.
The Healthy
Planet Forum is designed to ensure meaningful participation by civil
society in the ministerial conference process. This is a prerequisite to
raising awareness of the key issues on the agenda and ensuring civil
society buy-in leading up to, during and following the event. The forum
will be instrumental in effecting change and developing and sustaining
the momentum needed to ensure not only a successful conference, but
follow-up activities as well.
Preparation
activities to the Conference are held under the coordination of the
Minisrty of Health in Turkey. Youth Association for Habitat and Agenda
21 is taking place in the conference through UNEP Tunza – Europe.
